  • Last day of the year

Hi to one and all...I suppose it was appropriate that I awoke this morning after a seriously disturbed night to grey skies and not miserable or tired, but realising two things...one... never go to bed after playing computer games and losing a level over and over again, because you'll replay it in your dreams ad infinitum and it will be totally screwed because in a dream state and doomed to never being completed... And, secondly, avoid at all costs any foods containing hydrogenated fats or corn syrup because the first cuts off the signal to the brain telling you you are full and the second lays up fat without giving any energy...have avoided hydrogenated fats in biscuits in particular now for eighteen months and accidentally bought some for xmas, and neither hubby nor I could stop eating them...they were so moreish it became scary...I would have my main meal and would be full, and come upstairs to relax and watch tv and then have one biscuit, which normally I wouldn't do until at least three hours after a big meal, but once I started on these, I could eat ten or more and could have carried on until the whole packet had gone...then my stomach started to hurt because I was really, really overly full...this shouldn't be allowed! It's deliberately causing a form of addiction and that's why so many people are chronically obese now because so many foodstuffs contain it and don't send out the necessary signal to the brain that you're now full and should stop eating...that's really scary...
So, my lovely friends, two resolutions for you and us - avoid these lethal fats and sugars for 2008, don't go to bed after losing a computer game :> And have a wonderful New Year...may it bring you all you wish for yourselves and more...and thank you for being there since last March for me...I send you all great big hugs and loads of love...take great care of yourselves, you're all very precious....XXX

  • Almost another year gone

Hi to one and all...got up this morning to an absolutely clear blue sky and with the sun streaming in the living room, it looked gorgeous and upstairs in the main bedroom too, it was time to rise and maybe even go out if the weather held. We decided after breakfast as we had several parcels due to possibly arrive tomorrow, we would go shopping today, which we did. Poole was quiet and very pleasant to be in...the shops were all open and, if it hadn't been nearing midday and the buses only one an hour, we would have strolled around a bit more, but, in the end, dropped in to two or three shops, including Sainsbury's, did our shop for what we'd run short of over the hols and returned home...cloudy then and thought it might rain, but it didn't and now there's only a very thin layer showing blue sky beneath, but it's a bit chilly as well, though no wind now thank goodness.
We've done the washing as well, and now we're going to relax...had a lovely dinner last night...I used up the remains of the goose we had on xmas day and boxing day, and made a Chinese meal of mixed vegetables, bean sprouts, hoi sin and plum sauce and mushrooms with the goose breast and rice...it was really, really nice...goose is a strong tasting meat so this mixture went very well with it...tonight it's paella...with chicken, squid and prawns in their shells...not keen on mussels so leave them out after eating a rotten one in Barcelona and nearly killing myself, put me off for good...that will go through to tomorrow as well so save me cooking again :)
That's it for now, lovely friends, have a good rest of the day, and big hugs to every one...

  • It's working

Hi to one and all...my Windows Messenger has decided to start working properly again tonight :) Darn its perishing hide...wish it would make up its perishing mind...;D
Night night, lovely friends...off to see 'London to Brighton' to complete the square eyed evening...big hugs...

  • thought we'd been conned

Hi to one and all...funny thing happened tonight three hours ago...the phone went and a chappie asked to speak to my hubby when I answered it...hubby took it and I heard him ask who the person was then proceed to say yes to several things then the call ended and he said that his card had been used by somebody to buy airline tickets and some things from Tescos...and I panicked thinking it was that con mentioned on this site a week or two back...hubby was told his card though was going to be replaced and to destroy his current one, which sounded a bit different and he was also given a number to ring, which sounded like the con...so he phoned the bank itself and discovered the call was genuine and it was the fraud office calling him...from India!!! And, he would be receiving a new card because his card details had been stolen...
It must have been when the details of thousands of customers got hijacked and my hubby's card was one that actually got used!! At least the bank picked it up....we relaxed after being told that the call was genuine...and watched 'Hot Fuzz'...thought it was very good, bit slow to begin with, but improved tremendously after first three quarters of an hour...very British...:)
So, my friends, have a good rest of the evening, have a restful night, sweet dreams and big hugs to one and all for now...

  • Saturday, really!

Hi to one and all...it's a beautiful day and I've lost all sense of days...it's Saturday and doesn't feel like a weekend at all...very weird feeling...disorientation complete...had a brain storm this morning...hubby bought me four of Captain Beefheart's CD's and I got an MP3 as an extra from our son of Pat Metheny's latest CD for xmas...then discovered I couldn't play it...my comp doesn't like playing music while I do other things...think it's a memory prob...keeps cutting out or going crackly...so hubby says get yourself a decent player...he'd actually never noticed I had nothing to play my music on
I now have winging my way a Pure Dabs Radio/CD/MP3 player, that should last me for a very long time as such a good make and allow me to listen to the Jazz while on my comp as well...AND...have also found a Nintendo wii Console with a bundle of games from Gamestation so, feeling very guilty, but very happy too...smack hand very hard because getting to enjoy buying things...also have an executive chair coming as well and hubby's going to have mine which is comfortable for him but hard on my back - it needs cushions to make it okay for me...very difficult for me to find a comfortable chair so hope this new one will be fine...can't try it out first because only available online...
That's it, my friends, off to lunch now, have a lovely weekend and hope you're feeling better if you've been ill and big hugs to you all...XXX

  • Guess, did you hear?

Hi to one and all...guess what...the windows update crashed my comp :## Each time it updates, it tells me to restart and quite often it then keeps rebooting until I turn the comp off completely wait a couple of minutes and then try again on a 'best previous configuration'...so damned frustrating...I'm sitting in front of the comp going 'please start properly...please start properly...' how daft is that, as if it can hear me...;) The mystery is even though I've done the best previous...it still loads with all the updates installed..even though it kept rebooting when I restarted...?? I thought it returned to before the updates were put in, but seems not...ah well, comps are here to drive us up the wall...just one more thing to add to the long list...
But, I restrained myself and didn't swear...LOL...so once again, and for the last time today, night night, folks, sweet dreams and big hugs to you all...

  • The History Boys

Hi to one and all...have just sat and watched Alan Bennett's 'The History Boys' on BBC2 and thought it was excellent...wonderful script and never dragged and real old school of writing not seen much any more...don't know whether any of you saw it, but, if you did, hope you enjoyed it as much as we did...
The wind is gusting outside and makes me want to put ear plugs in...my Messenger has died on me and thought I'd try reloading it, which I did and it glitched and nearly killed my computer before the film...thank goodness I managed to get it to do best previous configuration and it came back...Messenger Live is a pain in the butt, keeps updating then crashing...at this moment, Windows is just doing a big update of my Office so am really hoping it doesn't repeat tonight's performance...
If you hear the dulcet tones of me swearing and cursing above the wind, you'll know it's buggered up my comp again..>:-(
Have a restful night, sweet dreams, and big hugs to one and all for now...

  • Picked up from Ranfuchs

Hi to one and all...read Ranfuch's post this morning and couldn't resist borrowing it...just love this next bit...and relevant to a previous post of his where empires were mentioned...

What did the Romans ever Do For US?

Reg: They've bled us white, the bastards. They've taken
everything we had, and not just from us, from our fathers,
    and from our fathers' fathers.
Loretta: And from our fathers' fathers' fathers.
    Reg: Yeah.
Loretta: And from our fathers' fathers' fathers' fathers.
Reg: Yeah. All right, Stan. Don't labour the point. And what
have they ever given us in return?!
    Xerxes: The aqueduct?
    Reg: What?
    Xerxes: The aqueduct.
Reg: Oh. Yeah, yeah. They did give us that. Uh, that's true.
    Yeah.
    Commando 3: And the sanitation.
Loretta: Oh, yeah, the sanitation, Reg. Remember what the city
    used to be like?
Reg: Yeah. All right. I'll grant you the aqueduct and the
sanitation are two things that the Romans have done.
    Matthias: And the roads.
Reg: Well, yeah. Obviously the roads. I mean, the roads go
without saying, don't they? But apart from the sanitation,
    the aqueduct, and the roads--
    Commando: Irrigation.
    Xerxes: Medicine.
    Commandos: Huh? Heh? Huh...
    Commando 2: Education.
    Commandos: Ohh...
Reg: Yeah, yeah. All right. Fair enough.
    Commando 1: And the wine.
    Commandos: Oh, yes. Yeah...
Francis: Yeah. Yeah, that's something we'd really miss, Reg,
    if the Romans left. Huh.
    Commando: Public baths.
Loretta: And it's safe to walk in the streets at night now,
    Reg.
Francis: Yeah, they certainly know how to keep order. Let's
face it. They're the only ones who could in a place like this.
Commandos: Hehh, heh. Heh heh heh heh heh heh heh.
Reg: But apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education,
wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh-water system,
and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?
    Xerxes: Brought peace?
    Reg: Oh, peace? Shut up

Great big hugs to one and all... for now....

  • Xmas

Hi to everyone...pouring with rain so hardly christmassy but mild so save on heating...have a great day everybody, and big hugs to one and all....XXX

  • It's nearly arrived

Hi to one and all...not a bad day...walked round in the bright sun to get the paper an hour ago, but had a really weird disturbed night...hubby snored his head off for two hours then went so silent I thought he died and woke him up because I hadn't been asleep at all and it was nearly two thirty...made both of us a cup then went back to bed and then had to get up every half hour until four having to use the loo because also had a cup of tea at ten o'clock as well...finally managed to drop off and woke up at 7.30 then again at five to nine and lay in bed listening to Start the Week with some really interesting subjects being discussed until one about Jane Austen came on and then I got up because thoroughly bored with her stories which have been done to death now, like Charles Dickens, who I much prefer, and had my breakfast...
Our son arrived safe and sound and he apparently slept quite well for a first night...now he's playing his Super Mario Galaxy on the tv, hubby's on his comp and I'm here on mine and peace reigneth HLOL...
So, my lovely friends, it's now lunch time and so I wish you a very good rest of the day, and hope you all have a great day tomorrow if I don't get on again...big hugs to one and all and loads of love...

  • Fabulous day

Hi to one and all...today the sun is shining and it's beautiful...cold but not icy so a lovely walk this morning round for the paper. There's black ice underfoot though so have to tread carefully.
Our son is going to arrive around four o'clock so really looking forward to seeing him again. We talk a lot on the phone but don't see each other very often...he has no where to put us up and it hugely expensive to take a hotel room for one night in London and he's not into travelling that much or very far so we meet up about once a year now...this will be a nice four days with him... :)
Nothing vital to tell you today...just a relaxed time here and hubby's now on his official hols until Thursday, the 3rd January...the day the local buses go on strike...and they're changing the route as well so he can't get his two buses into work any more after that day...:-/
So, my lovely friends, have a great day, enjoy this gorgeous sunshine, which I really hope you're having as well, and great big hugs to one and all...

  • One joke tonight

Hi to everyone...here's just one joke tonight...

Two groups of computer experts were set up in
order to find out whether computer is male or
female: one group was male, and the other group
    was female.

The group of women reported that computers
should be referred to as "HE" because:

    1. In order to get their attention you have to
    turn them on.
    2. They have a lot of data but are still clueless.
    3. They are supposed to help you solve problems
but half the time they are the problem.
    4. As soon as you commit to one, you realise that
if you had waited a little longer, you could have
had a newer and better model.

The group of men reported that computers should
be referred to as "SHE" because:

    1. No one but the creator understands their logic.
    2. The native language they use to talk to other
computers is incomprehensible to anyone else.
    3. Even your smallest mistakes are stored in long
    term memory for later retrieval.
    4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you
find yourself spending half your paycheck on
    accessories for it.

    **

That's it, my friends, have a restful night, sweet dreams and big hugs to one and all...

  • Chilling picture

Hi to everybody...found this video...it's not very festive. In fact, it's rather chilling...we do tend to think that we're all tolerant and accepting of everybody now, but it seems a lot of people aren't and this shows the extent of that intolerance...

Big hugs to one and all...have a good evening....

  • Great news for the Humpback whales

Hi to one and all...I forgot to add in my previous post a great piece of news...if anybody here signed the petition I put up a few weeks back to ask the Japanese Prime Minister to stop the killing of the 40 humpback whales, which the Japanese scientists said they required for research, well it worked...it is reported today that, due to international pressure, no humpback whales will be killed in the next one to two years...so, with a bit of good fortune, we might turn that it into never again...sadly a thousand minky and fin whales are going to be hunted down and killed...again it was said.. for scientific research...the Japanese spokesperson said they needed that many to study the ears of the whales to see why they exist?? and one or two weren't enough to establish that...I would have thought a thousand was definitely overkill and forty humpbacks equally so considering their size and how long they live for...harpooning them just to find out why they exist seems utterly barbaric and bizarre...unfortunately, the Japanese do not comprehend our attachment to the whales, so do not feel the same about killing them.
That's it...forty humpback whales can now travel the high seas in safety...at least for the time being...thanks to everybody who did sign it and big hugs to one and all...

  • Time moveth on

Hi to one and all...nice day outside now...decided we needed to walk to Lidl's this morning to get a few more sweet things for our son and us over xmas period, and hubby had come in with a cup of tea this morning while I was still in bed and said to me...'It's seasonal weather this morning.' And I looked up and said. 'What do you mean?' And he said, handing me my tea 'There's rain, dear, on the conservatory roof'...:)
It was raining right up until the moment he and I stepped out of the front door when it stopped completely and we went shopping in the dry and not half as cold weather as it has been and returned in the dry and blue sky coming through the now thin clouds...and I didn't get cramp again before or after lunch so well pleased about that...
So, my friends, just slobbing around now, and can't get used to the fact it's Saturday...the days have all merged in to one and I'm lost after having hubby home for three weeks ...still it's gives me some idea what it will be like when he retires, and I like it...roll on his retirement...it's good having him around, and we both do our own thing so don't have to be constantly entertained by one another, but do enjoy each other's company when we meet up to do something together...so, for now, I send you all great big hugs, and have a lovely weekend...

  • Not playing

Hi to one and all...I'm not playing...I've just had another foul internal cramp half an hour after my lunch...I know why I'm starting to get them again...with hubby being ill for three weeks, he's been here all week instead of away for four days of each week in the evening so I've been cooking us meals instead of me just having a very light snack for those days. The result is several extra pounds in weight and even more squashed up insides than they are normally...damn...I've been so good since I gave up smoking to keep my weight just around three pounds above eight stone (or seven stone twelve pounds in real weight because the rod weighs five pounds) and now I've shot up to nearly eight stone nine (or eight stone four pounds minus rod) in these last few weeks...and paying for it dearly...back to no food for the next...oh, no...I forgot it's xmas and that means either not having any xmas food or eating it and then being in agony for a few weeks until I get the extra pounds off again...it's not fair...my life is more austere than an enclosed monk or nun..can't drink because that puts on weight..can't eat only small amounts, and that includes very few sweets or cakes and no crisps or snacks at all...at least when I smoked, I could eat a reasonable amount of everything, and my weight stayed the same for years on end...I'm not sure whether it's a fair exchange any more...get a few extra years at the end of my life by not smoking but only able to eat very small amounts of food for the rest of my life, or to return to smoking and eat, drink and be merry within reason...a dilemma...be a leper, because that's what you are now if you smoke, or somebody who has had the majority of pleasures removed from her life if she's to live without pain...
Anybody out there who doesn't have problems like this, count your lucky stars...I'd just love to be normal bodied so big hugs to one and all...and any ideas on which choice I should make?

  • Nearly the hols

Hi to one and all...very cold, damp, foggy and foul this morning. Didn't want to get out of bed after spending 5 to 6 am awake and trying to get back to sleep again...listened to the news in the end and that's enough to make the dead fall asleep again, which I did...discovered though three facts during it...it's a myth that we should drink 8 glasses of water a day, that hair shaved grows thicker and that eyes deteriorate by reading in dim light....so, my friends, you can stop pouring water down your throats at a rate of knots, you can shave as often as you like, especially the women, and read whatever you like in the light of whatever illumination is available...:**: I know young ones who have taken the first one deadly seriously and must have bought thousands of bottles of bottled water since it came out and have been pouring it down their throats to stay healthy, which they did not...in fact they were far unhealthier than we ever were on our three or four at the most mugs of tea and the odd coffee each day
Hubby's gone to get the bread and the last of the odds and ends of our shopping in town. He phoned me half an hour ago to tell me he had just got on the bus...this meant he had been standing in the freezing cold for over half an hour waiting for it to arrive...that's really, really bad...I'm so glad I didn't go because I'd have been having apoplexy...and it doesn't do him any good either after being ill for three weeks...it was due around ten past, he got there at five past and it arrived at 10.35...deep damned sighs...
Oh, well, that's it for now...I feel a heck of a lot better and the only thing left now is a sore throat on one side and that's it...antibiotics are finished, and with a bit of luck, we'll get through xmas with no bugs...also glad son is coming Sunday because the news said that travelling at xmas time is going to be hell with roads blocked, trains cancelled and flights delayed for all those trying to get from A to B this year...lovely...
On that cheerful thought, I send you big hugs to one and all, and have a good day...

  • Ventured out

Hi to everybody...good and bad news today...by midday I suddenly started to feel a lot better. Hubby suggested that if it kept warming up, that we try to get down to our local Lidl's after lunch and I agreed having got up and dressed today...and that's what we did...both of us ventured out into the cold sunny day and discovered that there wasn't a breath of wind so it was cold but no icy bite to it...it's about a mile there and a mile back plus the walk round the shop, which is a good size, and I was doing fine when suddenly in the shop I realised I wasn't so fine...not being very active for so long my muscles had got weak and I found myself with internal cramps...it's like your insides knot up and you get a build up of wind on the blocked side which is really, really painful not to mention the feeling of cramp as well inside...managed to get home and found it took me nearly an hour to stop the pain, but now I'm fine again - haven't had anything like that for ages now...probably the antibiotics don't help either because they play havoc with my insides too...at least we have the majority of the xmas shopping done now and all that's needed is our bread for the hols and we've got all the food we need to avoid having to go into town again for at least a couple of weeks...hubby was okay as well, thank goodness, because he's only been round for the paper for the last four days since he's been ill...what a pair of crocks we are!! Not usually this feak and weeble...HLOL...
So, my friends, I am on the mend at last, seems the antibiotics have worked as I've only got one more left to take at ten tonight then they're finished...I think I'll just take it a bit easy still because I don't want another taste of that damned cramp again for a while...have a good evening, and hope all of you who haven't been well are also now on the mend, and all those who've had to brave the elements today have travelled safely, big hugs to one and all for now....

  • Hi, my friends

Hi to everybody...here's the understatement of the week....it's frigging cold outside!!!! Bloody hell...I was going to try to get dressed today and go shopping, but there's no way on this earth I'm going to stick my poor blocked up nose out of my front door...hubby's just got back from getting the paper and somebody was pouring hot water on his windscreen to remove the ice and, as soon as the hot water hit the ground, it froze in rivulets right across the pavement as it drained away!! Now that's the coldest I've ever known it down here since we arrived nearly eight years ago...
I'm still registering one degree under and just have no energy still, am just crossing my fingers as this is the last day of my course of antibiotics that the bug will begin to go by xmas day at least...hubby has taken three weeks to shake his off and I've only had this for a week so far :`(
Our son rang us this morning and wondered whether we'd like to go to the cinema on Boxing day to see 'I am a legend' with Will Smith, who all of us like...but I was doubtful whether I want to go and sit in a cinema with other people guaranteed to have loads of horrible bugs as well...he say almost everybody he knows is ill and he's had three really nasty bugs and colds in the last couple of months too...must be the lack of summer and the warm weather until this week...anyway, we've left it open depending upon how I feel and what the weather's like as well...need to get a taxi to the cinema as well as there's no buses to the leisure centre??? Wonderful planning isn't it...they cancelled the only bus up there from where we live because the bus company wanted too much subsidy and the council refused to pay it...ah, such is life...and no rants today...too knackered..HLOL
So, my lovely friends, I do hope if you have to go out, you take great care while driving or doing whatever you have to do in this bitter weather, and have a good day...great big hugs to one and all for now...

Hi to everybody...here's something I found that I thought I'd share with you, and I really hope Playwrite gets a chance to see it too now that she's been cut off from her broadband connection at home...maybe on a friend's....

Big hugs to one and all...have a great rest of the day....

  • Tetris

Hi to everybody...don't know whether anybody plays Tetris - I play Tetrix, the same style game but you play it on your comp instead of on-line...I checked what are high scores and discovered that the players don't play one game but keep one game going for ages so have massive scores...?? How odd...what happened to playing a single game and scoring as high as you can then finishing it? and they appear to score by lines and not actual scores...so I guess I'll just keep playing it my way and be happy with my single score of 60400 for one game and besides, I'd have to leave my comp on all the time to play the way the online players do, and there's no way I'm doing that...so much for saving electricity when millions of Tetris players leave their comps on otherwise they'll lose their on-line score if the game is paused...hmmm...big hugs to one and all...

  • New boots

Hi to everybody...lovely bright sunny day but very cold and still not really up and about yet but just pottering...at 7 this morning hubby asks me whether I wanted a cup of tea, and I said no, I couldn't wake up yet...at 7.45, the doorbell goes and my new winter boots I ordered a couple of days ago have arrived...apparently the postie always delivers up our end first...blinking my eyes open, hubby wakes me with a cup of tea now and the said boots. I've been trying to find a comfortable warm pair of boots for the ages now, and never realised it was going to be such a problem. They were either huge round the calves, or hard inside or unlined...can't see the point in buying unlined boots except for appearance and I'm don't buy any footwear for appearance anymore just comfort...getting the right darned fitting has been a pain as well...I fit anything now from 6 1/2 to 8, which is ridiculous but that's this world today...anyway the boots this morning were beautifully made Nike calf length boots - half price so a bargain, and with a zip that's so stiff you need to be Zena to pull it up...I know it's going to loosen off in time, but damnation, this is the second pair I've bought that I can't get into them without fighting for five minutes to pull the zip shut...nowadays they use those plastic tiny teethed zips and they are a pain in the butt...once upon a time, you got a nice healthy large toothed zip that run up and down with no problem...why on earth have the makers of boots stopped using them - they were not obtrusive because hidden under a flap of leather, and now use these stupid impossible zips?
Maybe it's to make suckers like me or not able to bend over easily, people like me keep buying more boots until one actually fits or the zip works...I actually missed this pair had a zip until hubby pointed it out to me and I was hopping mad, but too late, I'd ordered them and it would cost me £16 to send them back including what I'd lose on the postage costs to me...well, that's ridiculous again because not much under half the price of the boots...anyway, to cut a long story short, I am going to keep these and add them to the other two pairs I've bought this year...a knee length pair with the same incredibly stiff zip and a pair of Uggs that keep falling off my feet because the right size but there's no way they'll stay on?? Have now put a thick sheepskin sole inside and have a stretchy sleeve holder upper round the top and can actually walk down the road in them with leaving them in the street HLOL...bloody hell, what a farce...serves me right for buying off the Net...it's only because I can't find any boots at all in my size or style I want in the local shops so what else could I do?
Sorry about this rather shallow moan, but I don't understand why everything has to be such a pain in the butt nowadays...
On a good point, hubby's definitely on the mend, and is walking around declaring he can smell this and that now in ways he couldn't remember doing before ever?? I just smile and say that's good and try and get my head in gear because it's still dopey as hell...so, my friends, haven't had the energy yet to even write a card let alone post any yet, but then we've only received five so far and one of those is from our neighbour so no hurry then...HLOL...big hugs to one and all and have a good day...

  • A day of doing nothing

Hi to everybody...this has definitely been a day of doing nothing much at all, except to come up to my comp and sit here for a while checking friend's blogs and playing games...hmmm....that's about all I can do now...My brain has gone into retirement temporarily...haven't got the energy to think deeply at all...funny how the body almost shuts down while fighting a virus...does it each time...can't get annoyed about anything :.
BCUK have emailed me and told me they've changed the buzz blogs and only the best posts will appear now...it made me laugh, because for the first time I think since I've joined, I've made it onto it several times since we mentioned it to the team, and now I've disappeared again - maybe the changes have succeeded in removing me again...now you see me now you don't HLOL...
    that's it...knackered now...big hugs to one and all...have a good evening and sweet dreams....
