Hi to everybody...I don't believe it...I thought what can I have that isn't too fattening as a treat in the evening, so decided on a small packet of Maltesers...harmless enough I thought...little balls of airy centres surrounded by milk chocolate...not a bloody bit of it!! I've just read the ingredients...amongst the long list is glucose syrup - that's absorbed straight into the body and lays up as fat - and hydrogenated fat...which switches off the chemical telling you you've had enough, and now we know why you tend to keep gobbling those harmless little balls and wondering why they're so darned moreish...![]()
I thought most companies producing biscuits and sweets were doing away with hydrogenated fats in particular because so lethal...it might explain why there's such a massive increase in obesity as well...if you can't stop eating something, you're bound to get damned fat...and it's not because you're weak willed, it's because you're being fed lethal fats that interfere with your body's safeguards against over eating....Why are these ingredients not banned? The medical profession continually puts out now that obesity is a rapidly increasing problem in our society, but I very rarely if ever hear a doctor mentioning the contents of our food might well be responsible for the massive increase and not just plain greed.
It wasn't until I've had to watch my own weight since giving up smoking that I've explored the contents of so many foodstuffs that we consume pretty regularly or buy from time to time. It's scary...the only way I can stop myself from scoffing these Maltesers is to dish out so many for myself each day or whenever I want them during the week, and make sure the larger packet stays downstairs and out of my way. How weird is that? And it's nothing to do with me being greedy or weak willed. They're addictive....
So, my friends, that's it for now, have a good evening, and big hugs to one and all...

So I've discovered...Morgan Spurling who did the programme, Super size Me,...discovered hydrogenated fat nearly killed him after a month on junk food....he just couldn't stop eating burghers and junk food all of which contained it...I don't understand how it's still permitted now the medical profession and the government have been told what it does. It's in so many things still. I just didn't think to look for it in damned Maltesers! Or the chocolate wafers we bought for xmas, which neither of us could stop eating at all until we twigged why...I would suggest it's more dangerous than the tar in cigarettes and more addictive than nicotine...there must be some very powerful lobbyists for the food manufacturers behind the scenes I reckon...

A fat, lethargic, couch potato public is easier to control than a fit and healthy one.

You're damn right - I work for the Welsh government and some of the stupid things they think about banning (e.g. electric shock collars for dogs - ok they're not good welfare-wise but there's a case for their existence and they've never killed a dog therefore I don't see why its priority & why it's all I'll be working on for the next 3 weeks) - foodstuff that's addictive & making us overweight, which is what the government doesn't want, should be regulated more closely &/or banned.

Not heard of these collars before...are they the ones that give a minor shock to stop the dogs barking? Our neighbour's dog had one but has since had it taken off. It did seem rather cruel to me, but, if the dog had barked incessantly at some unearthly hour or even during the day, I might have said put the darned thing back on again please
I think these dangerous ingredients should be banned, not regulated...they are literally killing people and that has to be profoundly wrong I would have thought...the tobacco companies have been soundly berated for the same thing so why not the food manufacturers who are putting lethal ingredients into our food?-

Electric shock collars come in all shapes & sizes, the most popular being 'remote control' collars where the dog can be 'zapped' from a mile away - they're to stop it chasing livestock, people etc. I don't agree with them at all, don't get me wrong; I'd never use them on my dogs but when you think about all the animal welfare problems in the UK, electric collars don't seem that important, particularly when I think of one argument that said isn't a short sharp shock preferable to the dog being beaten with a stick? The answer speaks for itself really.
Anyway, good on ya for a wicked blog - very thought provoking!-

They sound pretty formidable if you can zap an animal from a mile away...how do you know that the dog is attacking livestock from a mile away, and that it's wearing a shock collar? LOL...sounds very sci-fi...sorry, I know it's a serious prob, but this doesn't sound as if it's the solution to the problem...the only way it could be, was if you had every dog in the UK wearing one then you'd be sure to stop a dog harassing your sheep or cattle...I think...one click on the remote control and fifteen hundred local dogs in the neighbourhood would be rolling around twitching uncontrollably...not a good idea...

And thanks, glad it gave some food for thought...maybe some darned food manufacturer will read it and feel a twinge of darned guilt...

Yes, I don't understand it either...why are we so lax over here about what's in our food? Whoever regulates the ingredients is doing a rotten job...for example, I believe monosodium glutamate can no longer be put into American food products, but it's still allowed over here...the body doesn't get rid of it, and it too enhances flavour making you want to keep eating more and more...Pringles' Crisps for instance...which are damned gorgeous but contain MG for our market...how bad is that! We've stopped buying them because it is in them...I don't see why they can't rely on the natural flavours instead of constantly trying to add things that make them literally irresistible....madness and tantamount to criminal on one level...lots of children are affected by these additives I'm sure, and we are inadvertently causing damage to them through no fault of our own, which is very sad and bloody annoying as well...

So I've discovered!

PurpleDragon

I tend to read the ingredients in most everything now (because of Lala) and it scares the heck outta me - just how many preservatives and additives we eat on a regular basis without really being aware of it.
