Seriously bad behaviour

Hi to everybody...just received a letter from Care2 that petitions for varies issues and this was one of them and the result....
Marines Disciplined for Tossing Puppy
The Marine Corps announced it was expelling one Marine and disciplining another for their roles in a video showing a Marine throwing a puppy off a cliff while on patrol in Iraq. Over 12,000 Care2 members signed a petition to speak out against this awful act of animal cruelty.

Glad somebody thought it was unacceptable behaviour...

My work stages "Support the troops" days, but I'm rather hesitant...well, I AM sorry they have to be over there, and I do know that it's one of the most toughest and dangerous jobs in the world, right now. Still, these stupid morons aren't doing the US military's image any favours---as long as these jerks keep thinking that they can do anything they want, just because they are Americans, then I'm inclined to be probably a lot less supportive of them, than I normally would be.

Does that sound awful?

  That's a bit harsh. I have a relative with PTSD from the Iraq war and he tried to kill himself with a broken bottle - almost succeeded too. Killing a puppy is bad, but not quite as bad as some of the other things that go on. The fact is that wars turn people into monsters. Rape, torture and murder become tolerated and almost acceptable as the soldiers get desensitized by the hideous things they both witness and have to do themselves. It's hard to be "normal" after your best friends brains have been splattered over your face and after you've blown up a building as ordered and discovered afterwards that it was in fact a makeshift nursery ward rather than a terrorist hideout.

    Yes, I know terrible things go in war, and the soldiers who survive it are often traumatized by their experiences, but these two individuals seemed to just playing around and thought the killing of the puppy was funny...damned stupid and insensitive thing to do, but worse, because they actually filmed it...at least the army responded by throwing one out and reprimanding the other...great big hugs...

      Those two individuals have probably seen their friends blown to bits and killed innocent bystanders by mistake. What they need most is psychological evaluation and several years of councelling. What will in fact happen to them is that they'll be dumped on the streets by the army and left to sink or swim on their own, full to the gills of horrible memories. The support that traumatised soldiers get is woefully inadequate. You'd think if they'd risked their lives and killed that they'd at least get helped to get over it afterwards. But no.

        Unfortunately, that's the effect war has on human beings...after the second world war, thousands of ex-soldiers committed suicide, including a failed attempt by my own father...counseling wasn't on offer and I doubt whether there would be enough counselors to go around after any war...collective counseling I suppose might work, but if soldiers are truly traumatized, they probably need one to one help, and that's just not going to happen...it's also the price soldiers have to accept if they enlist in the armed forces...if any do enlist not realizing how frigging awful war is then they must be truly dim...it's one of the reasons why I want to see an end to war as means of settling disputes...all it produces, apart from death and chaos is thousands of very very disturbed men and women too now let loose on society...probably most will take it out on their immediate families so the problems will be kept behind closed doors and not be known about...don't know whether we'll ever mature enough to settle conflicts without resorting to war...

        The situation is hardly any better now than it was after WW2, as the aftermath of my cousin's post-Iraq attempted suicide shows.
        
        I'm against war too, but how else could The Nazis have been opposed?

        I agree about WW2 but the proceedings wars since then were avoidable...The Korean war, the Vietnam war, the Falklands War, the Iraq war, the war in Afghanistan all of these were and are wars that could have been avoided...after WW1, it was called the war to end all wars...it didn't, in fact through the total mismanagement of the situation by the world's leaders after it led directly to WW2...disaster piled on disaster...tragic...I want to know when we'll learn that war resolves nothing...you can't even say that we defeated the Nazi mentally of superiority because it's resurfacing again with the rapid increase in racism spurred on by the media and the paranoia incited by fear of terrorist attacks...racist attacks are up and it's going to get worse I'm afraid...so what did we gain by defeating Hitler? Very little it seems to me...just a terrible, terrible waste of life...

        There are three basic causes of war: ideology, greed and politics. It's hard to see those first two two causes ever disappearing from human thinking. The third one won't disappear until the political landscape is radically changed so that individuals no longer have massive power and a resultant desperation to keep that power.

        Can't dispute this sadly...I call it the primitive brain in all humans at work still, governing territoriality, ritual, aggression and social hierarchy...into words TRASH...somehow horribly appropriate don't you think...until these primitive instincts are eradicated from the human psyche, wars will continue unabated...these instincts if allowed to survive will eventually trash the earth and leave nothing for the higher faculties found in the human brain...if we are to survive at all, we must overcome them...or rise above them might be a better way of putting it as they are in all of us, but some of us have succeeded in laying them to rest...

        TRASH sums us up nicely.
        
        These thoughts would depress me, but I've long grown to accept our basic destructive nature. All that each of us can do is to try and rise above it and be better, and try and persuade others to do the same. As both of us do :-)

        Yes, we are basically naked apes if we give into our basest instincts, but there's so much more we're capable of, and our potential is immense...I want to be patient and have the time to see us grow but I think I'll die before that happens and that's sad...when we use our truly human brain properly the whole universe opens for us, but most of the time we spend our time frittering away our potential on distractions. We all need to relax, but we also waste so much of our precious time on amusing ourselves rather than thinking and trying to grow into what we could be...it seems to me sometimes that we're being deliberately kept blind to our potential because those who instincts are still primitive need us to be kept that way, because if we cease to be blind, we'll see these people for who they truly are and that is utterly destructive for the human race's well being...perhaps one day we'll wake up, but until then, these naked apes will have their way with our world...

OMG!!! He really did it!!! Ok I can understand that it is a hard place to have to be, and it is hard to watch as your friends have their brains blown out; but come on!!! Who's to say that this moron isn't going to get back to his own country and start treating kids like this. If he acts like it there; he's not suddenly gunna change when he gets home. Jail sounds like a good place for this idiot.

  Yup, he did...well, he's out of the army now...perhaps that's what he wanted hence the filming of the incident...if not, then he was just an insensitive idiot who got what he deserved...great big hugs...XX
